VCPN Panel Discussion | Gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace

On October 1st, 2022, in Ho Chi Minh City, to celebrate VietPride 2022 week, Vietnam Corporate Pride Network (VCPN), including KPMG in Vietnam & Cambodia, ECUE, ICS Center, British Consulate – General in Ho Chi Minh City, Australia Consulate – General in Ho Chi Minh City, Australian Aid, Investing In Women, Auscham Vietnam, & Australia – Vietnam Leadership Dialogue (AVLD) organized a panel discussion on “Gender Diversity in the Workplace” to share good practices of preventing gender-based discrimination in the workplace. The panel also aimed to encourage collaboration between social organizations and businesses in promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusion.
The event started with the host Melissa Jardine (AVLD) introducing Mr. Simon Pugh, Auscham Executive Director, for the opening remarks. The good practices were shared by speakers from various organizations. Mr. Quang Binh – the Director at ECUE, shared about Gender Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in the workplace: a snapshot from international experience and Vietnamese context. Ms. Ngoc Hang – the Director of People, Performance, and Culture at KPMG in Vietnam & Cambodia, shared about Gender D&I in Internal Policy. Gender D&I in Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), marketing & communications was shared by Marketing Manager at Reckitt Vietnam – Phi Hung. Ways forwards – How firms & NGOs could collaborate to promote gender diversity & inclusion in the workplace.
Mr. Le Quang Binh – Director at ECUE shared that, LGBTQ+ people had been facing stigma and discrimination due to Gender Binary. Based on the theory that only two genders – men and women – exist, other genders had been labelled as abnormal.
Working as a leader in promoting Gender D&I at Workplace, KPMG has been on progress to create a safe workplace that brings equal opportunity for all regardless of religion, age, sex/gender, national origin, citizenship status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or other legally protected status globally in both policy and company’s agenda since 2015. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hang – Human Resources Director at KPMG in Vietnam & Cambodia shared that instead of following social trend, D&I culture was one of the KPMG’s characteristics which were #ComeAsYouAre & Together for better. KPMG understood that encouraging D&I could create a better place for everyone to work and feel belonging to.
To raise awareness in gender equality internally, Pride@Klub has been supporting KPMG’s people in Diversity, Inclusion & Equity. KPMG is also one of founding members of Vietnam Corporate Pride Network (VCPN), which is the cooperation of leading corporations & government offices to enhance awareness and to connect to LGBTQ+ community in Vietnam. These programs have been bringing unpassed benefits and creating a safe LGBTQ+ community within Global KPMG Network to support each other. Besides this, 52% of Partners & Directors at KPMG are women, reflecting the commitment of KPMG to promote a D&I workplace where everyone is treated with fairness regardless of their background.
The event also held a panel discussion hosted by Mr. Le Quang Binh, on how firms and NGOs could collaborate to promote gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Joining Mr. Binh were 5 panelists: Ms. Dinh Hong Hanh (ICS), Ms. Trang Nguyen (Intel Vietnam), Ms. Soline Linh (RMIT – Broward University Lecturer, Gender Activist, Leader for Gender Equality Across Industries, Women Empowerment Club HCMC), Ms. Mai Thi Nguyet Anh (KPMG), and Mr. Nguyen Phi Hung (Reckitt Vietnam).
The support of experts and corporates in this field is important for Vietnam to go along with the development of other countries because respect for gender diversity is standard, essential, and integrated into development.
